MACLAINE GIVES THE ESSENCE OF THE SEMINARS ON "INNER TRANSFORMATION"
By Steven H Propp
After famed actress Shirley MacLaine wrote two books about spirituality [Out on a Limb, and Dancing in the Light], she achieved virtual "guru" status in the "New Age" movement, which was just then reaching its peak. The former book was also made into a TV miniseries [Out on a Limb; VHS only], in which Ms. MacLaine played herself. This 1989 book was written after she had begun giving "pricey" seminars in "inner transformation," had released a workout video [Shirley MacLaine's Inner Workout [VHS only], and was generally considered the "queen" of the New Age movement. Despite long years of being criticized for expressing her spiritual beliefs, she (to her credit) stands firm in them, and has more recently written books such as Sage-ing While Age-ing and What If . . .: A Lifetime of Questions, Speculations, Reasonable Guesses, and a Few Things I Know for Sure, that update her beliefs. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 263-page Bantam hardcover edition.]

She wrote in the Preface, "I have been having an extraordinary adventure for the past seven years. Some would call it an adventure in cosmic consciousness, and while I would agree with that, I would also add that it is an adventure which enjoys the advantage of extremely pragmatic, down-to-earth application in real life... Everything begins at home and the choices we make within the Self. I used to hear these words and privately feel that this was simple `selfishness' or even dangerously self-centered fantast. No longer. To me, this concept has become a giant truth. `Know thyself'---and everything else follows. In fact I now realize that it is impossible for me to understand anything of the world, its inhabitants, their suffering... until I am in touch with these same currents and truths inside myself. To understand and love others begins with understanding and loving oneself... Millions of people all over the world are seeking to transform and improve their lives. They are painfully aware that the answers for a changed world are not coming from sources outside of themselves. The answers lie within. That is what this book is about. GOING WITHIN offers keys for enlightening one's inner perceptions. It is a kind of personal road map for achieving spiritual clarity that can make the transformation in inner attitude improve outer reality... This book grew out of the year I spent criss-crossing the country, conducting seminars on inner transformation... The intense, face-to-face contact ... helped me articulate and shape the journey I was making myself. Together we became more skilled in the techniques of meditation and visualization."

She admits, "Before embarking on the seminars I was concerned about conducting them without benefit of a degree or license of some kind. There wasn't much I could do about it, however, because there are no degrees or credentials in spirituality or metaphysics, which is interesting in itself. Actually, some courses in philosophy, physics, mathematics, and transpersonal psychology come close---which is also interesting." (Pg. 13) She explains, "What I find most interesting about New Age perceptions---that is, how the New Age is perceived---are the enormously fragmented points of view that it seems to generate. This argues for a lack of understanding... I hope I can help clarify the confusion. First of all, there's nothing new about the New Age. It is... a compilation of many ancient spiritual points of view relating to belief, the nature of reality, the practice of living, ritual, and truth, all predominantly originating in cultures other than those of the West.." (Pg. 25)

She suggests, "I have come to realize that `reality' is basically that which each of us perceives it to be. That is, what may be real to me is not necessarily real to a friend, much less a stranger. We each live in a separate world or reality. I know how abstract and esoteric that sounds, but it is the single most important truth I have learned. And it has helped me immeasurably in reducing anxiety and stress in my life." (Pg. 37) She adds, "this book is an attempt to share how I learned to access the spirituality within myself. Spiritual engineering has become a fascinating study, essential to me in stress reduction, and social and personal conflicts." (Pg. 46) She explains, "for me meditation is the process of relaxing my body and mind so that I can quietly go within myself." (Pg. 53)

She admits, "This understanding brings us to the most controversial concept of the New Age philosophy: the belief that God lies within, and therefore we are each part of God. Since there is no separateness, we are each Godlike, and God is in each of us. We experience God and God experiences through us. We are literally made up of God energy, therefore we can create whatever we want in life because we are each co-creating with the energy of God---the energy that makes the universe itself." (Pg. 85)

She asserts, "The Bible itself... is a great repository of recordings of psychic phenomena such as miracles, seers who channeled the word of God, spiritual guides who brought wisdom and rescue to biblical characters in trouble... Heavenly chariots abound in the Old Testament... Ezekiel wrote that the spirit of being from the craft entered him and told him to go to Israel to prevent the rebelliousness there... The conventional story of the life of Christ is well known. Less well known is his connection to the Essene brotherhood... Christ was a member of the Essene brotherhood, which, among other things, believed in reincarnation. Their teachings are so universal in nature and contain so many elements of our own esoteric and, now, scientific searching that it is worth taking a look at who these people were and what we know of them." (Pg. 177-178)

She concludes, "Maybe the more we go within ourselves with love, using the techniques and age-old procedures of color and energy and sound, the more we simply remember who we are and come away enlightened with the truth that we were all there at the beginning. We are therefore one. We are each therefore part of God. We are each therefore naturally harmonious, and our individual recognition of that harmony is in direct ration to how deeply we recognize and accept the God with ourselves. With that profound realization perhaps we can trust the loving and well-ordered magic of who we are meant to be and get out of our own way and create our lives accordingly." (Pg. 263)

Although Ms. MacLaine has long since eschewed such seminars, and though large parts of the New Age philosophy contained herein seems quite passé, it is still a well-written expression of such spiritual beliefs, and those interested in contemporary and progressive spiritual practices may find much to appreciate in this book.
