Held Me Captive
By Jimmy Lee B.
It's very frustrating when you see only a part of a movie. I have managed to see portions of Hostage several times - including the end - but never the complete film. I'm sure I've been missing all sorts of dramatic tension, teenage rebellion, and creepy villain behavior. (Sadly we also lack a Netflix account as I am married to the last Neanderthal on earth). So I finally gave in and bought the book, which tells the story of retired-with-a-past (we'll use the convenient shorthand of "ex-hostage negotiator") police chief (we'll just call him for convenience Bruce Willis) having to deal with a hostage situation involving serious creepy guys in his sleepy town with an oddly constructed home that appears to be a fortress...which for some reason has attracted the interest of other criminals (we'll call them for convenience the Mob) who are thinking about ways to compel Bruce Willis to resolve this situation pronto.
Here's the good news: the book is chock full of tension. The book and the movie do not resolve in the same way - and there are a number of additional characters that the movie (I'm sure to tighten/streamline the story) omitted. And having seen portions of the movie, I was quite happy to just keep picturing Bruce Willis as the lead character. Couldn't put the book down - definitely a page turner. If I see another Robert Crais on the bookstore shelf, I'll be picking it up.

Look out, Lee Child
By Richard B. Schwartz
Crais's L.A. REQUIEM was well-received, though I had reservations about his decision to show a side of Joe Pike which ultimately weakened his force as Elvis' nearly invincible, shadowy partner, a character I call the avenging angel and compare with figures such as Parker's Hawk and Lehane's Bubba.
Since then Crais has written two freestanding novels, DEMOLITION ANGEL (which had a huge movie sale and of which we're likely to hear more) and HOSTAGE. HOSTAGE is pure power plot. The elements are thrown into the cauldron (SWAT burnout, vulnerable family, drifter defectives, the mob) and the relentless chemical reaction follows.
HOSTAGE gives new meaning to the term 'page-turner'; it's a page ripper. Its only competition is every book by Lee Child. I would give Child the nod at this point, since HOSTAGE is so light on character and setting. The dramatis personae are all very familiar and there is relatively little narrative texture to impede (but also enrich) the plot.
Child is the master of this form and Jack Reacher is a more interesting and unusual (without being weird) character than Jeff Talley. He also takes us to a host of interesting places. But thank the lord; you can read both of these skilled writers, each of whom is at the top of his game.

Crais has done better
By Kindle Customer
I really hate having to harsh on a Robert Crais novel since the majority of his other books are better.
This book takes place all within a 24 hour period when almost everything that could possibly go wrong does. My problem with this book is not in the writing but in the substance. I can generally suspend belief to enjoy a novel but this was just too much.
We've got robbers who pick the wrong mini-mart to rob. And the wrong store owner. And they have the worst getaway car in the world. And they just break down and jump the fence into the house of a mob related accountant. And the accountant just happens to have a safe room with tons of cash. And one of the robbers just happens to be a serial killer. And the chief of police just happens to be a former SWAT negotiator.
Are you out of breath from the number of coincidences in that? I sure am. This novel had screen play stamped all over it. A bummer since Crais brough us Elvis Cole who is an awesome character.
I'm going to go back to my Elvis Cole novels. I hope Crais does too.
