Carry on Soldiering

This is fifth book I have read by Evelyn Waugh. I have come to appreciate his style of writing and his style of humor. Both of those reasons would justify, in my opinion, reading any and all of his novels. However, for those expecting a lot more, the author doesn't always deliver. That is the case of "Men at Arms". I came away wondering what the point of the book was meant to be. I also came away wondering where all of the emotion behind the advent and early days of WWII were. Maybe the author, who lived through that time, gave us a better view of reality than the Winston Churchill "Finest Hour" image that we all hold. Then again, I don't want to criticize this book, or any book, for not being what it never intended to be. What we do get is a humorous look at a collection of individuals coming together to become British officers from scratch. The various ways they act, react, and interact is what makes the book enjoyable. The main character, Guy Crouchback, comes from a somewhat fallen aristocratic family and feels the need to make something of himself as war seems imminent. Being in his early 30's makes it difficult for him to find his spot until he meets up with an old associate who gets him into a newly forming brigade. To try and explain any more of the plot might make it seem dull. In fact, it moves along well; not because of action but because of the interaction. Guy Crouchback is like all of Waugh's main characters that I have come across so far; they have a certain detachment from what's happening around them. That aspect gives for a keener insight but can tend to leave the reader a bit detached as well. If you've read Waugh before then you know what you're getting in. If not, this may not be the book to start with. I'd suggest "A Handful of Dust" instead.

An accurate view of the absurdities of army life anywhere, in particular at the beginning of the second world war. Waugh has a kken eye for irony and the ridiculous.

An American disaster deconstructed

In depth story of an early American disaster.
I had heard some about it in a History Channel series on American robber barons of the 19th century.
According to that program, Andrew Carnegie's lieutenant was supposed to have something to do with the fishing club and dam. I didn't see anythng about him in the book, 'tho that doesn't necessarily mean much.
Over all, an interesting look at this tragedy, with much information from early sources.
Found the non political correctness interesting, as I would have expected.

Boring!

This was the third book in a series of three. The first book, "Twice Upon a Time" was great. The second book, "A Ring and a Promise" was excellent! But this book was dull. After reading it off and on for four days, I finally skimmed the rest of the pages and didn't even read the final chapter. I found myself not caring what happened. I guess the story was okay, but it was just a sleeping potion for me...perhaps just not my kind of story.

I have enjoyed all three «Weddings by Woodward» books. It was so refreshing to see Abby overcome all the obstacles that her mother placed in her way. I, also, appreciated the character of Jessica. Like so many of the students I have had over the last three decades, she is willing to accept someone new and make them feel welcome.

More plot holes than a connect 4 board

I understand that romance fiction is not renown for its high quality writing. I do. But I have enjoyed a few Christian romances in my time. This one has an incredible amount of plot holes. Just because I read a romance novel, does not mean I don't have a brain. I expect a story to be at least a little plausible.

Donovan's goddaughter is 7, he left Denver only 5 years ago (usually godparents are assigned at the Christening), he had a job in Europe? Where in Europe? Ariane speaks English with no hint that she may be bilingual, so England maybe? No hint at an accent either once she finally starts talking. What kind of a "job" would want a high school grad to move from Denver all the way to "Europe"? Is it really logical that a girl from "Europe" who refuses to speak would make friends so quickly in school?
