Quentin Coldwater is a geeky high-school senior in Brooklyn who is convinced that happiness and “the life he should be living” are elsewhere—for example, in the series of nineteen-thirties British adventure novels that he was obsessed with as a child. When Quentin stumbles on a portal that takes him to a college for magicians in upstate New York, he learns that the world depicted in these novels, known as Fillory, is real, and he is forced to square his youthful ideas with the realities that exist there, too—boredom, regret, shame, and despair. Quentin’s journey becomes an unexpectedly moving coming-of-age story in which he learns that magical worlds are much like the real one, in that they are places “where bad, bitter things happened for no reason, and people paid for things that weren’t their fault.”

so I'm somewhat prone to the "If you like Harry Potter

I grew up as a Harry Potter kid, so I'm somewhat prone to the "If you like Harry Potter, you should try..." tactic. That's how this book was marketed to me, but I don't find the comparison between the two to be very natural. Yes, both books are about angsty boys who go to magic schools where they suddenly find that they fit in better than in the real world, but I found the similarities between the two to end there. The main character's entire tenure at the school fits into the first book, and Grossman takes a much closer look at what happens to graduates of magic schools than does Rowling. Further, Grossman's book has a much more melancholy feel to it than does the Potter series.

Finally–I did not like the protagonist of the first book very much. There were aspects of his personality that would make me never want to hang out with him in real life, which concerned me as I considered whether to start the second book in the trilogy. As the second book is told primarily from the perspective of a different character, I was happy to find that the unpleasant aspects of the protagonist's personality are a part of the character, and not some sort of "inherent truth" that Grossman was trying to convey.

Funny, poignant, wry fantasy

I let the negative reviews here dissuade me from reading this book for a long time, but I'm so glad I finally did. I've now read the entire series through twice, and I can't think of a book (or series) that's affected me so powerfully, or that I've enjoyed so much, in many years.

I can see how the main character, Quentin, can get on people's nerves. He's depressed, he's cranky, he often fails to see the amazing world right in front of his face. But that's kind of the point. It takes a while for some of us to grow up. And it takes some sympathy and a bit of effort to love Quentin. Personally, I got there, and I enjoyed watching him mature and learn to love.

These books are not derivative. Yes, there's a school for magic, but it's completely unlike Le Guin, Rowling, etc. The main characters drink, have sex, and delight in profanity. Sometimes they are mean or even downright nasty to one another. (And these are the good guys.) There's also a Narnia-like land. But the gods aren't like Aslan, in fact they're kind of jerks. In the end, Fillory isn't so different from earth -- it's just prettier. So there is an element of wry commentary directed at the fantasy genre, but it's loving, and it turns the conventions upside down.

I couldn't put the books down, laughed every other page, and even found many parts surprisingly touching. There's a lot going on here. It isn't your standard fantasy fare, and I for one am delighted with that. I'm just sad that the series ended at three books.

Reviewers who are disappointed that this is not another iteration of the Harry Potter or Narnia series are missing the point. This is not an fantasy adventure book or even a book about magic, whee! I would liken it most to A Wizard of Earthsea - a bildungsroman, a coming of age story. Quentin, the teenaged main character, is not hugely sympathetic at the beginning, but in the course of the trilogy he matures. The magical world element is used in a speculative way: what would people who could do magic, and were therefore almost limitless in their abilities, decide to do with their lives? Mopey, dissatisfied Quentin must engage the question we all do eventually: how, then, must I live? Watching him develop, make terrible mistakes and pay for them, and eventually find himself to be a real adult who can live in the real world, is a pleasure equal to the fantastic plotting and world-building.

Professor John Gardner (PhD  MSc  PGCE  BSc  FBCS  CITP  CEng  AcSS FCIEA) is Deputy Principal (Education and Students) at the University of Stirling. His main research and teaching interests include policy and practice in all sectors of education, particularly in relation to assessment and information technology.He has over 120 academic publications and has authored or co-authored seven books, the most recent being: Assessment and Learning (2012, Sage), Developing Teacher Assessment (2010, McGraw-Hill/Open University) and The Classroom X-Factor (2011, Routledge).

Outdated, with too much focus on philosophy rather than practical applications

This book was required for a graduate course. I would not recommend it. I deeply regret that I dropped $60 on it; I wish I had purchased it used. I have no intention of keeping this book once the course is finished.

Most of this book focuses on educational philosophies that you can read about in other texts or on the internet (e.g. constructivist theory, behaviorist theory, et cetera). The book is also significantly redundant. Allow me to summarize it for you: "Educational technology and the Internet is GREAT! It enables people all over the world to access information in spite of their socioeconomic class, physical abilities/disabilities, and so on!!" The authors have found at least a dozen ways to repeat that general concept throughout the entire book.

They try to include practical examples with links to web sources in information boxes, but almost all of the links are dead ends. The resources have been shut down. I tried to Google some of the sources in case the URL changed, but it was not successful.

In a chapter on online courses, they state obvious facts that anyone familiar with BlackBoard or D2L, as a student or professor, should already know: You can set up an assignment drop box, discussions, course messages, and so on. They also cover obvious online resources: You can provide students with hyperlinks to videos or games, for example.

Throughout this book, the authors ignore issues with digital literacy skills. They vaguely and briefly refer to them but offer no possible solutions. I still feel that online learning benefits students who already have metacognition skills, self-efficacy, and time management skills, and who are strong in reading and writing. Students who lack these qualities will find it difficult to succeed in online courses. This book did not offer any solutions for those issues.

If you are looking to learn more about blended learning or how you can develop better online resources for your students, this is not the book for you. I gave it two stars only because it was organized well and was readable; at least the authors were not unnecessarily verbose like some textbooks I've purchased before.

A worthy purchase for academic library collections and individual trainers and teachers involved in e-learning

A vital resource for teachers and trainers involved in technology-enhanced learning environments, especially those developing courses for e-learning.

The first three chapters lay the foundation for the rest of the book. The authors -- one a faculty member at Concordia University in Montreal and director of the internet company, Inishnet, and the other a professor of Education at Queen's University in Belfast in the area of communication technology --explore what e-learning is, and use a wide range of examples to demonstrate e-learning in action. The authors then chart the history of e-learning and discuss how it is "set to revolutionize... our approaches to learning."

In Chapter 4, the authors focus on who is using e-learning, what are they "e-learning" for, and when and where are they doing it.

Chapter 5 outlines "e-learning theory - communal constructivism" and how learning theories relate to new modes of learning and learners. Makes the point that "communal constructivism" is "presented as the key extension to socio-constructivist theory." Focuses on how, "within the networked communication world that e-learning provides, it is a natural step to the formation of communities of individual learners pursuing the same goals.

Chapter 6 focuses on e-learning design, its concepts and considerations, and "how e-learning activities and resources can enrich the learning experience... [and] scaffold students' thinking" which then serve to "integrate critical thinking skills and provide 'cognitive apprenticeships' which furnish the learner to engage with experts in the subject of their area."

Chapter 7 focuses on powerful tools for learning that design features of e-learning can incorporate, eg. layout, navigation, copyright restrictions, use of wireless networks, etc.

Key themes in Chapter 8 include the "accessibility and impact of e-learning on communities of learners who experience special access difficulties (eg. sight-impaired individuals), offering examples for those with such special needs.

Chapter 9, the final chapter, "concludes the tour of the concepts and practice in e-learning by looking to the future to try and establish where the new developments...might be headed."

The publisher, SAGE, can be counted on to provide excellent scholarly resources for the academic research community. This book does not disappoint and is a worthy purchase for academic library collections and individual trainers and teachers involved in e-learning.
