From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com Reviewed by Maureen Corrigan It doesn't much matter what I say about this new Nora Roberts novel; most of the adult female population of the planet is going to read it anyway. It's a staggering understatement to say that Roberts is review-proof. There are more than 300 million copies of her books in print, and she's written 160 bestsellers, 39 of which have debuted at No. 1. So let's step away from Roberts and her books for a moment and, instead, consider me. I'm the fall guy here -- the stooge who's been assigned to review "Black Hills" -- and whatever I say about Roberts is going to affect me a heck of a lot more than it's going to affect her. If I pan the novel, I come off as a snooty-pants literature professor, and I'll be deluged by e-mails from her ticked-off fans. If I gush over it, I'll be suspected of trying too hard to be just a regular gal, a self-conscious populist, like Sen. John Kerry on the campaign trail back in 2004, ordering a better class of cheese on his Philly cheese steak. So here I am, caught between a rock and a hard place. Roberts's feisty heroines are often stuck in this kind of fix at the climax of her tales just before a deus ex machina in the form of Mother Nature or a hunky guy drops in to rescue them. That's why women read Nora Roberts: to live out vicariously the fantasies that real life doesn't provide. Well, I'm going to live out a personal fantasy for a moment and pretend that it's still the Golden Age of Critics: Mencken, Parker, Woollcott, Wilson -- witty gatekeepers of culture who said what they thought without fear of the backlash of the booboisie or the demagogy of the Internet. I'm going to say what I think straight out: "Black Hills" is synthetic mind candy. It's not even very satisfying synthetic mind candy, like, for instance, Clive Cussler in his prime or Patricia Wentworth's soothing Maud Silver mysteries. Roberts could probably do better than a novel that, chapter by chapter, feeds her readers the top 100 female fantasies: (1) a rock-'em/sock-'em romantic partner who also takes out the garbage the minute he's asked; (2) a French lover; (3) lustrous hair that keeps its shape even when a serial killer is looking to scalp its owner; (4) a rollicking shopping spree with the girls, followed by a spa day the following week; (5) a fierce wild animal (in this case, a cougar) that, inexplicably, forms a loving bond with the heroine. Need I continue? In addition to cougars, there are horses, a tiger, hapless hikers and a serial killer on the loose in this latest bodice-ripper. Because that's essentially what Roberts writes: romances with a soft patina of suspense. This latest smooch-and-shoot saga spans three decades and many twists of the heart. It begins in 1989 when 11-year-old Cooper Sullivan is dispatched from his home in New York City by his rich, divorcing parents to spend the summer in South Dakota with his salt-of-the-earth maternal grandparents. Down on the farm, Cooper is bored by what Karl Marx called "the idiocy of rural life" until he meets a tomboy named Lil Chance who pitches a mean fastball. Cooper returns every summer until, nine years into this ritual, he and Lil decide it's time to play a more serious game than baseball. Camping together out in the wild, they mate like glorious young bobcats. ("You're like . . . gold dust all over," pants Cooper adoringly when he undresses Lil for the first time.) Their Edenic camp-out ends abruptly when, on a lover's ramble amid the wildflowers, the pair discover a young woman's corpse. It seems that the beginning of their love affair has coincided with the beginning of a serial killer's career. Shortly thereafter, Cooper inexplicably dumps Lil by telling her he needs to prove his manhood to himself, or some such rot. He becomes a New York cop while she sets out to build the wildlife refuge she's always dreamed of. Years pass, and Cooper returns to South Dakota to care for his ailing grandfather. He and Lil circle round each other for about half a second before they're tussling in the sack again, this time at her cozy cabin in the wildlife refuge. Roberts describes their coupling thusly: "Outside one of the cats called out, a wild thing prowling the dark. He took her there, into the dark, and what was wild in her cried out, released in harsh and primitive pleasure." The big cat, however, isn't the only thing prowling in the dark: That pesky serial killer is still around, and he's had Lil in his sights for a long time. To give Roberts her due, she keeps this fluff aloft for hundreds of pages (partly by repeating the same sex scene every other chapter or so). "Black Hills" isn't much of a suspense story, and the romance is so silly that it isn't even good fantasy fodder, but none of Roberts's fans will give a hoot. For beyond any of the fantasies her individual novels heat up and serve, it's the tale of Roberts herself -- her transformation from an average mom to a Dickensian lean-and-mean writing machine who maintains her down-to-earth, saucy persona in the face of stupendous success -- that offers the most satisfying fantasy of all. That's a tale that Roberts fans, as well as her critics, can agree to applaud.

Have your ticket ready

The Queen of suspense-filled romance novels once again treats her loyal fans to a thrill ride of intrigue that twists and turns through the Black Hills of South Dakota. As expected, this ride has well-defined backdrops, with all the sights, sounds, and smells, culminating to give the reader an experience of a life time. Enough with the standing in line...let's get to it. When Lillian Chance was a teenager, a chance meeting would introduce her to a young man named Cooper Sullivan. During a dinner between Cooper's grandparents and the Chance family, the two would form a bond that spans a lifetime. Years later, both would go on and pursue their dreams. Lil Chance is a world-renowned biologist that specializes in big cats and founded the Chance Wildlife Reserve in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Cooper Sullivan is a cop that also works security. That is, until a colleague of his is murdered. Coop, has finally had enough and returns to the small town in which he grew up.

Hold on tight, 'cause here comes the drop. Just as Coop returns home, he discovers a murderer lurking within the town, and with each new murder getting closer to Lillian, his feelings toward her grow deeper and deeper. Will he be able to protect her? Will the love they once shared be rekindled? Lil still has bitter feelings toward Coop, can she put them aside? I could tell you, but what fun would that be? Nora Roberts has an uncanny ability to build suspense and she does just that in her newest novel. This is a romance, however, and unlike rollercoasters that whip the reader around at breakneck speeds, Black Hills allows the reader to enjoy every aspect of the ride. Nora Roberts has put great detail and research into the backdrops and this ride is more reminiscent of a themed-coaster and not an old-fashion raise your hands and scream-coaster. That is Nora's style: depth, quality, and substance......I would also highly recommend JoAnna Wylde's novel: Price of Pleasure-- Price of Pleasure an excellent, supenseful novel.

eerily reminiscent of Montana Sky, not her best work.

I must admit that I usually buy most of Nora's books used because I love her books so much that I would spend a fortune buying new. This time I caved in and bought the hardcover for $18 a Wal Mart and was somewhat disappointed.

Almost immediately after starting the book, I had a strange sense of Deja Vu. The problem with having written close to 200 novels is that even the best writer will eventually run out of new material. Right off I saw numerous similarities to her book Montana Sky. How many times can you write a story about a crazy person who leaves dead animals on someone's doorstep? I did get a sense that the romantic conflict was drawn out, and since the reader discovers rather early on in this book who the person is doing the evil deeds, suspense gives way to the sense that Nora is trying to draw the story out as long as possible and it becomes rather old.

This is one of Nora's titles that I would check out at the library or buy in paperback because it's not worth the price of the hardcover.

A Three, and That's Being Generous

I'm a HUGE Nora Roberts fan, but I do understand that not every book is going to be liked by everyone. Unfortunately, this was the Nora book that I did not like.

For me, it's Lil's character that ruins the book. I understand being pissed, but geez, at a certain point, get over it. Yes, it does take Cooper quite a bit of time to tell her what he's really thinking. But, part of that is because she's such a royal bitch to him. I wouldn't tell her anything either. Chapter 24, he's basically told her his reasons for dumping her 10 years prior, and she even says in her head that she can understand why he did it, she's had sex with him numerous times, he's basically done everything right, and practically every other character in the story has told her to forgive him, but she still isn't 100% convinced. Way to be a best friend, Lil.

Nora made this character so determined to never let this man hurt her again, she basically took away all the chemistry between them. By Chapter 26 I was past caring about these two, and wondering why Cooper was still even bothering.

Also, maybe it's just me, but the book just seemed so full of unnecessary fluff. Almost as if Nora had to make a certain word count, but the story wasn't big enough to fit, so she just started adding scenes until it did. Again, by chapter 26 I was thinking "When is this going to END?!" and that's really rare for me when I read a Nora Roberts book.

I was so done by that time, that I basically skimmed the last few chapters and then put the book away. I'm not exaggerating when I say I didn't even want to look at it. The whole experience was disappointing to say the least.

Sorry, Nora. Everyone has hits and misses, and this one was just a BIG miss for me. I was going to give it only two stars, based on how I was feeling by the time I gave up on it, but added one because I like Nora so much as an author, and many parts of this were somewhat entertaining. But for me, this was nowhere near a five-star book.

Silence cloaked the room as Christian Wil-liams's guilt-ridden words hung in the air while her gaze remained locked on her half-eaten dinner. The soft shuffling of the servants' feet and then the soft click of the sliding door signaled they'd left her alone to deal with a man she didn't know anymore—her husband.

The tension thickened and robbed her of the confidence she'd spent months building. Look at him, her inner voice commanded. That simple task proved to be the hardest thing she'd ever done.

With balled fists and a shaky disposition, Christian forced her gaze to meet Jordan's.

The eight-foot glass dinner table might as well have been a mile long—a good symbol of the distance that had grown between them.

Jordan's midnight-colored eyes clouded from a brewing storm. Her heart nearly stopped, and in its place a sharp, unbearable pain pulsed with every breath she took. Evidence of her husband's Spanish-American heritage dominated his strong features. With short-cropped, wavy hair and eyes darker than the darkest night, his distinguished, sophisticated looks never failed to turn heads.

Christian's gaze caressed his skin's golden hue with longing. She turned away when she realized what she was doing. However, her courage restored, she chanced another look. This time, she focused on the subtle signs of maturity that graced his eyes, then his salt-and-pepper mustache, which added to his masculinity.

The soft lighting from the chandelier illuminated the room. Tiny lines along his jaw twitched, a sure sign of his anger.

She waited, waited for an inevitable explosion.

He lowered his fork, then wiped the corners of his mouth, all the while never breaking eye contact.

Why doesn't he say something? Anything would be better than this silence. The silence condemned her, accused her of a terrible crime.

"I'm sorry," she said. Her tears struggled for release. Pain flickered across her husband's hardened expression, then disappeared. Was she wrong about his feelings? She couldn't be sure, not until he said something. Anything.

Seconds stretched into minutes, confirming her worst fears. He didn't care. J.W. Enterprises was the only thing that mattered. The company he'd started years ago had practically become the air he breathed, and she refused to compete with it any longer for his time, or his love.

Against her will, tears brimmed and blurred her vision, but she refused to let them fall. Her chair screeched like a locomotive as she stood from the table. With as much dignity as she could muster, she pulled the four-carat diamond ring from her finger and placed it on the table, along with its matching gold band.

It's over, her head shouted, but her heart begged to stay. In that same instant, Jordan broke eye contact to stare at the golden rings.

Christian turned and forced one foot in front of the other. In truth, she wanted him to stop her, to ask her to reconsider, but it didn't happen. The clicking of her heels against the marble floor echoed in her ears. He wasn't coming after her.

The realization threatened to choke her. Weak-kneed, she managed to make it out of the dining room, relieved that he couldn't see the tears that finally streamed down her face.

Don't go. Jordan exhaled. Denial took hold of his heart as he waited in vain for his wife to return. He would not, could not, believe what had just happened. A divorce? His gaze returned to the two rings. A deep ache penetrated and settled within him.

Snatching his wineglass, he emptied its contents in one gulp. He closed his eyes, and with a trembling hand lowered his glass. What could be wrong? He looked around at the exquisite furnishings, at the rewards he'd been able to provide. He'd made sure Christian had the best of everything. Never had he denied her anything.

Sure, they had their share of problems, but they always managed to work things out. Lately, his company demanded most of his time, forcing him to travel five to six days out of the week, but Christian understood all of that—didn't she?

Jordan stood, tossing down the white linen napkin from his lap. His gaze returned to the rings. Fear gripped him, while the image of his wife removing her jewels replayed in his mind.

Neglect. That was it. He hadn't spent as much time with her as he'd like to, but the situation was just temporary. With his company's new software hitting the market in the coming months, he'd been subjected to a tremendous amount of pressure.

Too much time had passed. It was now or never. He needed to talk to her. The pain mirrored in Christian's expression haunted him. Her brimming tears broke his heart.

He went to the end of the table and retrieved her rings. He squeezed them in his hand, then left the dining room to confront his wife. As he walked up the massive mahogany staircase, apprehension jumbled the words in his head. Two servants skittered out of his path when he reached the top level, but he hardly noticed. He needed a plan.

First, he'd apologize, for whatever he was guilty of. Then he'd promise to spend more time with her. That should make her happy. And when she forgave him—if she forgave him—he'd shower her with roses, jewelry, whatever it took.

At the bedroom door, he drew a deep breath and opened his fist. The two golden rings glittered back at him.

Jordan pushed open the door and stepped inside.

Something was wrong. At first glance, the room's picturesque decor looked normal. However, the anxiety trickling through his veins warned him otherwise. Something was definitely wrong.

He moved in farther and took a closer look.

Where was she? Fear returned as he rushed toward the walk-in closet. As he passed Christian's vanity, he saw sparse items littered the glass top. As he threw open the closed door, time stopped. Rows of naked hangers hung from the rods.

Jordan retreated and refused to believe his eyes. She wasn't gone. Making a one hundred and eighty degree turn, he sprinted toward the bathroom. More of her things were gone.

The weight of the rings drew his attention. He opened his hand and stared at them again. He could no longer deny the truth. She left me. Numb, he returned to the master bedroom in a daze.

When he plopped onto the bed, something crinkled beneath him. Shifting his weight, he pulled out some papers. Delta tickets? Where is she going? He flipped the envelope open and stared at the two tickets. Destination: Bermuda. More questions formed in his head. Departure: September 18. That was yesterday. He rummaged through the other papers and found hotel reservations for a honeymoon suite.

Jordan looked again at the word honeymoon. September 18. Their wedding anniversary. He'd forgotten their anniversary…again.

Damn.

For two hours Christian drove around the city of Atlanta, listening to the steady rhythm of the windshield wipers blend with the music on the radio. Its mournful tunes about lost love intensified her misery and elevated her loneliness. The night's events seemed too surreal, too inconceivable.

She exited off I-285 and drove to Courtlane Highrises in the heart of downtown. Once inside the parking deck she cut the car's engine, then slumped back in her seat and let silence encase her. Her fragile emotions swirled inside her, bringing her, at times, to the brink of hopelessness.

She couldn't convince herself that this was for the best, or that she was doing the right thing. If any of that was true, then why did she hurt so much? Why did she feel as if her world, and her life, were over?

A car alarm squealed out a warning in the distance, jerking her from her reverie. She took a cautious look around, then stepped out of the car.

In the lobby, a young man asked if she needed help with her bags, but Christian refused the offer and handled the task alone. When she reached the door with a plastic smile in place, she hesitated.

She wasn't ready for this. The last thing she wanted or needed was sympathy, especially from her best friend, Alexandria.

Christian shook her head at the lie. If she didn't want or need any of that, then why was she here?

She knocked.

Her heartbeat quickened as she prepared for the onslaught of questions. After a few seconds, she feared Alex might be asleep. Glancing down at her luggage, she contemplated whether she should find a hotel for the night.

A series of locks clicked and turned, pulling Christian's attention back toward the door.

When it yanked open, Alex's almond-shaped eyes widened in alarm. "I don't believe it. You left him?"

Christian walked past her six-foot friend to enter the apartment. The entryway, shaped like a luminous glass capsule paved in limestone, gave the apartment a unique look. "I like your new place," she commented.

"Don't change the subject. What happened?" Alex gestured to the luggage outside her door. "And what's all this?"

"Almost everything I own." Christian's tears threatened to return, but she blinked her eyes dry, then got busy grabbing bags.

Alex said nothing as she turned and helped her best friend place the suitcases in the guest bedroom.

When they were done, they went into the living room.

Christian plopped down onto the white, kidney-shaped couch and leaned back to stare up at the curved ceiling.

"I'll fix us a pot of coffee," Alex offered, disappearing into the kitchen.

"What have I done?" Christian whispered. She closed her eyes and prayed for strength and guidance.

Soon, the fresh scent of coffee drifted from the kitchen, filling the entire apartment with its wonderful aroma.

Alex returned and turned on the stereo. The soft, soothing voice of Nancy Wilson played through the speakers.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Alex joined Christian on the couch.

"I don't know where to begin." Her defenses weakened under Alex's concerned scrutiny. "I just know it's over." Her voice cracked and her lips trembled, but no tears fell.

"I'm sorry."

"Not as sorry as I am." Christian laughed cynically.

"Don't do this to yourself."

Talk about two stories in one!!

I absolutely loved this story. I love it when a man drops everything to be with his woman. Okay, so it took Jordan a while to figure it out, but he did eventually! I love how Jordon and Christian met and fall in love. I liked the fact that the story did not focus on the past but on the present, but gave us just enough of the couple's history for us to have a good understanding of why the couple isn't doing so well in the present! I loved all the characters in this story. Alex, Malcolm, Rosa, and Noah were great. Alex and Malcolm's story was the little extra that made this book, in my eyes, the bomb! The development of each story was great. And the ending was the best and very touching. I cried!! I loved it and I hope you like it to because it teaches us to forgive each other, put our pride aside, living our lives to the fullest, to always communicate with our loved ones, and to never ever put anything before the ones we love! Always remember, love conquers all!! Nice work Byrd!

Good Follow-Up Story

Say You Love Me is the follow up to I Promise.
Christian felt her husband (Jordan) of 15 years was neglecting her. He would always forget important dates, like anniversaries and birthdays. When she reminded him, he would always shower her with gifts. She didn't want that. She wanted HIM.
Jordan was successful at running his software company. He had broken any communication with his father because he did not want to be a part of the family business.
This story Say You Love Me is just what the title says. Sometimes it just takes you to say the words I LOVE YOU. It has so many lessons in it. I was so glad that there were old wounds that were healed in this story. I am glad his twin brother Malcom and Alex finally got together.
It was sad that there father died, but at least he died with a smile on his face, because he righted some of his wrongs with his children Jordan and Malcom. Again this is a good story. If you have not read it, please do so.

Enjoyed The Finale'

If you like novels that deal with the ups and downs of marriage, this is one to read. Thanks Ms Byrd for bringing the sequel that includes Christian, Jordan, Alex and Malcolm. The story has both the seriousness and the intimacy which I truly like in a story. The book is a very easy read, very enjoyable and heartwarming. Some of my other favorite books by this author: I Promise, Forget Me Not and Defenseless.
