Truly terrifying

I read this book when it first came out in the 1990's. I'm writing this review now because, 1- the current (July 2014) outbreak of Ebola is "the deadliest in recorded history," and 2- I've NEVER forgotten the book. I can honestly say that in a way, it scarred me for life. The book terrified me. The thing that is so terrifying is the way the poor people who contract the disease die. It is just horrible. Once you start reading, you won't be able to put it down. But be warned, it is very disturbing.

I really cannot think of anything on Earth more important than preventing the spread of Ebola. Please don't disagree until you have at least read this book.

Great read for healthcare workers and interested folks

THIS is the real story. I read it the first time while it was unfolding and everyone was riveted to the outbreak, saw the CDC scientists on then groundbreaking and current TV interviews while they were figuring out what was going on with the first Ebola outbreak. This book follows their field work and their research and travails while trying to prevent anyone else from spreading it around. Of course we had the recent outbreak which really spread like wildfire. The hot zone is level 4 at the CDC, which houses the worst viruses, like smallpox and Ebola. AIDS is on level 3. This is a graphic and SCARY book. It gets preachy at the end, which bored me somewhat after all the excitement.

Fascinating and terrifying

I remember reading this book when I was younger, high school I think and being absolutely enthralled. Then when ebola surfaced again a few years ago I knew I needed to read this book again for the knowledge it contains. While it looked like ebola could potentially come again to the US it was important to know what the viruses could do. I have so enjoyed this book that it has been read three times and will probably be read more in the future because I'm sure ebola will once again arise from the depths of the rain forest.

Really informative

I love how it really shows a more detailed view about Jefferson's personality and his interactions with specific people that were in his life from Sally Hemings, Maria Cosway, and others. (not giving spoilers). All in all, this is a really great book.

An interesting read, not a factual one

Fawn Brodie has a beautiful voice for writing biographies that have a way of pulling the reader into the story, rather than just telling it, and it is for this reason alone that I recommend this book.

There are many other Jefferson biographies out there that will give you a much more accurate picture of our third President, but there are few that will give you such a human story.

The problem with this book is that it spends a great deal of time in fantasy and theory. There are points in this book where I found myself literally rolling my eyes at the theories that Brodie puts forth. It is clear that she had read too much Freud before publishing this book. When Jefferson states "Tranquility is an old man's milk," Brodie suggest that what he really means is that he is looking for "a young breast on which to lay his head." There are many points in the book like this, where Brodie attempts, maybe too hard, to put a different light on a well studied subject. It only serves to interrupt what is otherwise an enjoyable read.

Taken as a semi-fictional biography, it is worth the read. If you are looking for a more factual history, I would steer clear of this particular book.

An exercise in denial

No, this isn't the best biography of Thomas Jefferson ever written--that remains to be done, incorporating ALL the evidence amassed thus far, and leaving it to readers to think for themselves. But I'm disheartened that most of the reviews here say more about the readers than the book. And what they say is rather sad and frightening. Splitting statistical and scientific hairs about the DNA evidence, etc., may comfort some, but why it is so incredibly scary to so many people that this man may have indeed had an affair with a Black woman escapes--and intrigues--me. The fact that it may have been a love affair, not just the usual ugly business with which we're usually confronted seems to me actually more proof of Jefferson's character--and uncommon intellect and ability to deal with the complexities of racial matters--not his lack of same.
No, he didn't handle it as well as some of us might have wished--his Notes on the State of Virginia prove how incredibly strange his views of non-whites could be. But if this man, who knew so well what the public would do with such a liaison, continued it, grappling daily with it, finding a place for it and a way to reconcile it all within the confines of Monticello and beyond...I salute him. Brodie, and all others, be damned...

"Expecting the Spaniard's baby!"

Ruthless Tycoon, Inexperienced Mistress by the very talented Cathy Williams was extremely exciting to read. Cesar Caretti is one stubborn and driven man and he's extremely frustrated with his younger brother who he's threatening to take away his trust fund. Now this very same brother has requested a meeting to discuss a project he's working on and Cesar is frustrated at leaving London, and he driving in a horrible snow storm. Upon arrival, he's very aware that his brother has started up an upscale jazz club and he's also aware of a young woman who's not the typical date his brother would choose. She's somewhat of a tomboy and she's very cheeky. On top of that, he takes her home as the storm continues and gets snowed in for days, which puts him over the top.

Jude is a woman who speaks her mind, is a designer and her closest friend Imogen is Cesar's brother Fernando (Freddy) little secret. They are in love and expecting a baby but Freddy wants to open a club and is afraid that his brother will think Imogen is a gold digger. Because Jude is their dedicated friend, Freddy feels it best to keep Imogen and the baby a secret. Cesar, Jude believes is a stubborn a stern man and on top of everything they are stranded and stuck but she takes advantage because it gives her time to speak on Freddy's behalf. What neither of them count on is the attraction and when they act on that attraction, everything goes up in flames.

When the snow clears and Cesar returns to London, he can't get her out of his mind and when he learns that Jude is pregnant with his child, he's determined they will marry and that she will live closer to him. They are both stubborn as mules but in the end Cesar wins out! On top of everything else, there is a ghost in Cesar's past, his wife who he's literally put on a pedestal because she died early in their marriage.

Cesar's and Jude's story is full of turmoil and compromises and extremely spirited and in the end, beautiful to read.

well crafted characters

Wow, what a strong theme - Cesar's frustration of keeping tracks of his hopelessly free spirited brother Freddy, who actually is a lovely guy. But needs lotsa growing up. Then there is Jude. Wonderfully loyal to her best friend, Imogen who is secretly pregnant to Freddy and generously loving in her approach to life. Fiercely independent of Cesar's need to control things - even the house he buys her has to be put in his name! A good strong story with the right salt and pepper flavoring of romance. I like it very much

Good on the other reviewers bringing up the inconsistency in the cover. HP and authors need to be put on notice with this slap-happy sloppiness.. We're paying for their business. The least they could do is get it right. (Although I have to say that is seriously one heck of a male model!)

This story was nice. Not one I could not put down as some, but still a good story. I am one who likes to look at the cover and see if the characters match. They don't match in this story, except for Jude's (Judith) elfin features. Hair is short on book, long on cover, wrong color too. A minor issue that still would not stop me from recommending the book. Jude is a strong character who sticks to her guns till the end when she's sure Cesar loves her. I love a strong heroine!
