The Holy Grail for how the early manned space program happened.

If you want to know how the first person to set foot on the moon was chosen, or any of the other why's that were previously unknown and hidden to outside knowledge, then this is the book that you'll want to read.

Deke Slayton was an astronaut himself with one of the most fascinating personal stories (which we learn in this book). But he was also deeply involved, perhaps more than anyone, in choosing who flew and on which flights.

Before Slayton died at a relatively young age, his name was added to a book called "Moon Shot," which was shallow and disappointing. The stories I knew he must have were not in there. With his death, I assumed that we'd lost any opportunity to know how the astronaut selection process had worked, something which had decided which spacefarer would be a name to be remembered for all time in the history books, and who would be obscure, even forgotten.

But then I found that he hadn't written "Moonshot" - he'd actually been working on this second, much better, much deeper book. And here are all the stories. For the first time, we learned how some of the most historic and momentous decisions were made. It makes for fascinating reading, and I am thankful that Slayton took the time to get it all down on paper before he passed away.

Possibly the best recommendation for this book is that many astronauts have commented that they did not know why they had been picked for certain flights (or passed over) until, decades after retirement, they read this book.

An essential read for anyone with the slightest interest in some of the most important historical events of our age.

Straight from the heart - the truest "American" novel

I feel sorry for anyone who can't find echoes of their own youth in Wolfe's undeniably Romantic writing. You won't find clipped Hemingway-esque sentences, nor the pages-long obscure wanderings of fellow Southerner Faulkner, but Wolfe recreates his world so perfectly that filming it would be redundant. "Self-absorbed"? Yes, how else could anyone produce a literary translation of a life's experience? Cliched? Not when it was written, although as a "coming of age" novel it has many predecessors, none were so ambitious in scope or detail. Achingly, achingly nostalgic, beautifully written, TRUE to itself, sparing nothing of the author or his vision. Pretentious? Hardly, especially when set next to the Oprah-fied books on the best-seller lists today. This and its immediate succesor "Of Time and the River" are, to me, arguably the finest books ever written describing not just life in America but more importantly the sense of loss through time and distance of love, family, and home and the emotional maturation that follows.
No, I couldn't recommend this to EVERYbody, but if you haven't become too sophisticated to remember what it was really like to be young, lonely, in love, or homesick, or to see though a child's eyes the wonder in a leaf, a stone, a door; to cry "Oh, lost!" over a memory, you will find much to cherish in this book.

A prose poem

"Look Homeward Angel" is undeniably a young man's story and as such, I wonder if it appeals to men more than it does to women. It's hard to imagine how the novel's countless aches and awkward blunders would fail to resonate with any man's youthful recollections. When readers in Woolfe's hometown castigated him for his venial characterization of the people he grew up with, Woolfe pointed out that none of his characters represented any one particular person. Instead, their qualities were so real and so vivid that readers felt they instantly recognized them. And so it was with me, although I was born decades after Woolfe's death and raised in a different part of the country. The dialog, drama, and emotional undercurrents of "Look Homeward Angel" were strangely and overwhelmingly recognizable. This is the genius of Woolfe.
My favorite parts of the novel vary considerably. I love the prose poem in the very beginning of the book. I also love the protagonist's descriptions of seemingly ordinary activities such as walking through a pasture on a fall evening. Such passages have the unnerving quality of being accessible yet somehow ineffable. A part of you is walking through the field with Eugene Gant taking in the cold wind, the smells of smoke and cow manure under the grim sky. Another part of you is asking why that experience feels so real and immediate even though you've never had it before.
Woolfe took a microscope to ordinary people and somehow rendered them great. He did not accord them the stature of epoch heroes or contemporary celebrities. Instead, he rendered their feelings and actions as immediate as their surroundings. You probably would not want to be any of the people in "Look Homeward Angel" and you might not even like them that much. But you will come away from the book with the sense of knowing those people intimately. For this reason, it is impossible to finish "Look Homeward Angel" without a having profound emotional response.

Thirty years later and still in love

I loved it in 1968 as a college freshman and I love it today as a 52 year old prose lover, ex-hippie, and wage slave. While discussing the book with a classmate in college thirty years ago, He dissed Wolfe by saying that his writing was pretentious. I got seriously upset and wanted to slug him. Enamored I was and still am. After a hard day at work, you may not do better than get lost in the hill country of North Carolina. The characters are so real that you will be saying to your spouse or significant other, "Hey sweetie, listen to this" as you read passages of what seem to be your life. The book takes us places that we can see and feel. Intellectual? yes. Soulful? Hell yes! Settle in and read maybe twenty pages a day. You will be moved.

Deep Spiritual Text - Direct Translation from Wilhelm (Chinese to German to English)

Said to be the closest direct translation of the ancient text. This I-Ching has provided enormous vision and clarity upon my personal situations and decisions. Once I understood the way the oracle is reached, I was able to even provide others with deep meaningful readings. No modern translation and/or interpretation can provide this sort of revelatory experience. I cannot tell you that you will be able to completely understand this book, as it is highly mysterious and uses a great plethora of symbolism from both the natural and man-made world. There are direct quotes from Confucius in the footnotes, Foreword by CG Jung, and remember, the chart is on the back page and the instructions are in the Center. That should help you get started. The coin method works fine. There is a great reason why many of these books are in "Used-Good" condition on Amazon....their previous owners have read them over and over again!

Must-Have Commentaries

I use the I Ching earnestly and frequently for its intended purpose (divination) and find Wilhelm is always my guy. Next to him on the shelf are the Blofeld, Ritsema, and Wen translations. Wilhelm's ability to weave in the commentaries and elucidate the symbolism of the poetic imagery is unmatched in these other versions. It provides clear contours with more than enough metaphor at the center.

If you feel Wilhelm is too archaic, try adding Ritsema's translation as it provides a richer set of linguistic tools to access the text. Only bring Blofeld in when you're totally stymied.

I was expecting the yellow hardcover book that was listed. I ended up with the same book version but I was not expecting anything other than what was pictured. Very misleading and I am not sure if what I have is a newer or older version.

Trust is the key word in this story.

Though the story line is similar to some others I have read. I did enjoy this one. Written during Elizabethian times- the widower Sir Edmund Blackwell is having to accept an offer made by his ex-father-in-law to get the castle and lands back into shape and it will take a large sum of money. A bride and large dowry has been offered to Edmund with strings attached. It is made clear that the father-in-law is out to ruin Edmund. But Edmund is not one to turn down a challenge and accepts. He is to marry his deceased wife's cousin and if she is anything like Elizabeth was, Edmund is in for a miserable time. But she turns out to be just the opposite. Gwyneth Hall doesn't realize she is being used like a pawn and goes into this marriage to make it a success though she has never even met Edmund. With time Edmund lets his guard down to see Gwyneth as she really is and Gwyneth learns that there is a different person behind that face of Edmund's. Full of passion, some humorous bits, and over-all enjoyable.

delightful sixteenth century romance

In 1591 England, the parents of his deceased wife summon Sir Edmund Blackwell to see them. Edmund's father-in-law Lord Langston offers to buy back Castle Wintering, the estate he gave as part of his daughter's dowry. Edmund refuses, but Lady Langston points out his lack of funds to run the estate. She offers a different deal. Edmund marries Langston cousin Gwyneth Hall and receive a large dowry too. The only clause in the marriage contract that gives Edmund pause is that if he dies without a male heir, Castle Wintering returns to Langston. Needing money badly after his spouse's excesses, Edmund accepts though he feels he deals with the devil.

Edmund does not trust his second Langston bride though Gwyneth works hard to quickly gain the support of his people. Edmund begins falling in love with his wife and wants to believe her behavior is genuine, but wonders what her role is in whatever nefarious scheme Langston has concocted. Still love blossoms between the Blackwell couple, but trust is a more difficult feeling to attain.

Though the overused theme of a marriage pawn is the underlying concept of HIS BRIDE, Gayle Callen keeps the story line moving through the wonderfully caring Gwyneth, albeit even if she acts too perfect while trying to prove to Edmund that she has no deceit. The Langstons are too avariciously villainous while the lead couple is a delight as Gwyneth wins over everyone but her skeptical husband. Fans of Ms. Callen's "His" tales will enjoy this novel made pleasant by the lead "Her".

Another enchanting entry in the series

Edmund begins as an exceedingly wary man; it takes the innocent and genuinely caring Gwyneth to eventually earn his hard-to-win trust. He's been so deceived and harmed by her extended family that she must be another means of twisting the knife. Gwyneth, however, knows nothing of her family's evil plans; all she wants is a loving husband and a family and a home of her own. Edmund seems rather dark after his earlier appearance in His Scandal, but his change began there and becomes clear as we learn what has happened to him.
Enough mystery in who's the traitor to maintain interest in the backplot. Humor, romance, sensuality, and emotional appeal. An excellent follow-up to His Scandal.

Great, Great, Great Book!!!

I wanted something to read one day, and my daughter had this book (and the others in the series)laying around....so I read them all. This is a WONDERFUL series! The books seem to be "light" reading. My daughter doesn't read a whole lot..but she did read this series and enjoyed each book. The subject matter is just about everything a teenager (or their friends)will experience. Caitlin and her friends don't always make the right choices and there isn't always happy endings. (I don't want to give away any story lines or endings!) My daughter felt the story lines were fairly true to real life...and gave her an "insight" how to deal with different circumstances. As a mother, it gave me the insight as to what a teenager is thinking, feeling, and possibly experiencing.

Life Changing...

At least, it was for me. Last summer (2002), I became a CHristan. Not just going to church every SUnday kind of Christian. I mean, a full out want to know all I can Christian. I had never felt like that before. And I owe it all to this book. I read this book that life-altering summer and couldn't put it down. I spent the whole day reading it. Cailin's struggles were like mine -- I could relate to the character, which compelled me even more. The way the book touched me is indescribable. But I thank Melody Carlson for writing such a memorable, life-touching novel for teenagers. It changed my life, my way of thinking.

Caitlin O' Conner was a regular girl not popular and not unpopular. She had one best friend and all she needed was one. She didn't see why you had to alot of friends when all you needed was one true friend. Her best friends name was Beanie. She had one religion, as a Christian, her family got along with each other fine, no relationships, one crush.

Along with Caitlin's normal life she was turning 16 and along with that came troubles. on her 16th birthday she had started to become apart of the popular crowd, and from ten on things went wrong, her friendship with Beanie, her religion, her family life, and BIG problems with boys, girls were getting pregnant, and she didn't know if she was going to have sex or not she was scared that it would effect her religion, friends and family.

The diary of a teenage girl was the absolute best book that I have ever read. This book had a huge impact on how I see the world, or at least the part I see everyday.

The book changed my thoughts because I saw things a little bit different. Maybe it was because I am a teenager myself, and I can understand some of the problems she had.

I would highly recomend this book and especially if you are a teenager. I guarantee you will see thingd in your enviroment differently. Like I said I am a teenager and it made a huge impact on me.
