AN EXTENSION OF TRANSACTIONAL ANALYSIS (TA) BY AN ASSOCIATE OF ERIC BERNE'S

Claude Steiner (born 1935) is a psychotherapist who was a close friend of Eric Berne [games people play], a founding member of the International Transactional Analysis Association, and the author of books such as The heart of The matter: Love, Information and Transactional Analysis, Emotional Literacy, etc. He wrote in the Preface to this 1974 book, "When I began writing this book, I intended it to be a revision of my previous book, Games Alcoholics Play... it quickly ... became... a whole new book on the Transactional Analysis of Life Scripts... Eric Berne was the spring whence the major ideas of script analysis originated..." (Pg. xvii-xviii)

He begins, "I want to briefly state the three concepts which together set transctional analysis apart from the mainstream of psychiatry today: 1. People are born O.K.... 2. People in emotional difficulties are nevertheless full, intelligent human beings... 3. All emotional difficulties are curable, given adequate knowledge and proper approach." (Pg. 1-2) He concludes, "the above three points are, to me, principles of transactional analysis that cannot be dispensed with without uprooting and disemboweling it." (Pg. 9) He later summarizes, "Transactional Analysis is the study of relationships." (Pg. 246)

He says about the book I'm OK -- You're OK [a bestselling "popularization" of TA], that "Amy and Tom Harris introduce a subtle but fundamental shift. They list the unhealthy position 'I'm not O.K., You're O.K.' as being the first and 'universal position' from which all people need to extricate themselves... the Harrises reverse one of Eric Berne's fundamental points about people and re-establish the notion that people begin life not O.K., needing to rid themselves of their original sin... [An] interviewer writes... '...Berne believed that we are born princes and the civilizing process turns us into frogs, while [Harris] believes that we are all born frogs.'" (Pg. 10) Later, Steiner says that "The original position, 'I'm O.K., you're O.K.,' is rooted in the biological mutuality of mother and child..." (Pg. 85)

He notes that "Eric Berne was forty-six years old... when he abandoned his training as a psychoanalyst after fifteen years of pursuing the title of psychoanalyst. He parted... when his 1956 application for membership as a psychoanalyst was rejected by the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. The rejection was probably quite painful to him but it spurred him to intensify his long-standing ambition to add something new to psychoanalytic theory. He never spoke about why he was rejected, probably because he was angry about it. I suspect that he was not submissive enough to psychoanalytic concepts (he certainly wasn't when I met him two years later)." (Pg. 13) Later, Steiner adds, "I was not able, due to his death, to share with him the thoughts ... which are the main points of this book." (Pg. 26)

He explains, "A script is essentially the blueprint for a life course. Like theatrical tragedy, the life scripts follow Aristotle's principles of drama... prologue, climax, and catastrophe." (Pg. 60) Later, he adds, "The script, then, is a decision the young person makes by choosing between his own autonomous needs and expectations, and the pressures of injunctions he encounters in his primary family group." (Pg. 81) Steiner admits, however, that "A person's life may fit into one of several different possibilities. She may be script-free or she may have a script... Not everyone has a script, since not everyone is following a forced, premature, early-childhood decision... [But] the fact that a person has a script is a detriment to the possibilities of living to the fullest human potential." Hernon and Rossiter's study of leadership includes different approaches, perspectives, and theories on this complex topic. The first two chapters discuss the current academic workforce, its leaders, and challenges. Subsequent chapters treat leadership literature, theories, effectiveness, diversity, and assessment. Two especially interesting chapters, 17 and 18, discuss the concept of managerial leadership and how it applies to the information profession. Notes at the end of the chapters provide lengthy lists of further reading and research, as does the long bibliography at the end of the book, which includes unpublished sources. About the Author

Peter Hernon is professor at Simmons College, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where he teaches courses on government information policy and resources, evaluation of information services, research methods, and academic librarianship. He received his PhD from Indiana University and has taught at Simmons College, the University of Arizona, and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He is coeditor of Library & Information Science Research , founding editor of Government Information Quarterly, and for nine years, been editor of The Journal of Academic Librarianship. He is the author of more than 240 publications, 44 of which are books. Among these are Outcomes Assessment in Higher Education (Libraries Unlimited, 2004), The Next Library Leadership (Libraries Unlimited, 2002).

Nancy Rossiter is an assistant professor at Simmons College, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where she teaches management classes, including principles of management, contemporary management theory, marketing the library and information entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the Simmons faculty, she taught for eight years at Bay Path College, Bryant University, Providence College, and Roger Williams University. She was instrumental in developing an entrepreneurship program for women at Bay Path College. Prior to teaching on the college level, Dr. Rossiter owned a publishing company in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. She has also been a consultant, with clients including GTECH, Bryant's Small Business Development Center and Center for Management Development.
