A pleasant surprise from a familiar author

"Creed" is an unexpected offering from one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Colleen McCullough's "Tim" and "The Thornbirds" are two of my favorite books, but I don't usually admit to being a fan since these stories are somewhat simplistic romances. This book is very different from her other works. While the writing style is still quite simple and her symbolism is much too obvious, the novel offers a thought-provoking vision of a not-too-distant and all-too-possible future. The creation of a modern day messiah through the government's manipulation of the media is a fascinating premise. This book makes me a little less shy about admitting that I am a McCullough fan.

Sophomoric, but well-written and engaging

You know the story. The child Jesus Christ is born during the reign of Caesar Augustus, despite the efforts of the local monarch Herod. He reaches adulthood during the reign of Augustus's hand-picked successor Tiberius, and preaches a message of spiritual renewal to an oppressed population. His apostle Judas Iscariot acts as his ministry's manager, but later betrays him to the government. The story is later told for the ages by a Gentile named Luke.
This book translates that story into the not-too-distant future. Unfortunately the translation is rather sophomoric. Dr. Joshua Christian (Jesus Christ) is born during the presidency of Augustus "Gus" Rome. His story unfolds during the presidency of Augustus's hand-picked successor Tibor Reece (Tiberius), when the government invents "Operation Messiah" in order to bring a message of spiritual renewal to an oppressed citizenry, despite the reluctance of Cabinet secretary Harold Magnus (Herod). Christian's advocate Judith Carrioll (Judas Iscariot) manages the project, to his ultimate detriment, while hired biographer Lucy Greco (Luke the Greek) tells his story for the masses.
"Creed" is both less and more than a simple analogy for a time-transplanted gospel. Despite the many unsubtle analogies to the New Testament, "Operation Messiah" does not follow--cannot follow--the story of Jesus too literally, so author Colleen McCullough experiments with twists on the story in its twenty-first-century setting. Sometimes her twists makes sense, but more often they do not, and they leave the reader wondering where she was trying to go with her story. She may not have known herself. But she paints an interesting twenty-first-century America, despairing over climatic and economic changes, whose government goes searching for someone "capable of teaching a sick nation how to heal itself" and finds--then elevates--a made-to-order messiah.
Even though this book slathers on the parallel names and other biblical analogs a little too thickly, I did enjoy it. The plot left much to be desired, but the writing was very good, the narrative flowed easily (even when the author seemed unsure about where it was flowing to), and the story was occasionally thought-provoking. The book was not deep, but it was engaging, and in the end a satisfying read if you are looking for entertainment and not philosophy.

A decent premise, but that's about it

"Creed" imagines a future world menaced by ice. North American society has taken mainly to the warmer climates in order to escape the descending glaciers, and nobody's very happy about it. While war and international strife are all but gone, life expectancy is at an all-time low, overpopulation is a dominant issue, and it looks like man's days are finally numbered.

So the President orders a search. A search to find a person who can cheer everyone up. They find a psychologist by the name of Joshua Christian. Mr. Christian serves as a media-born Messiah figure, guiding a crippled civilization into the dim light of hope and salvation.

An interesting concept, sure, but McCullough does little to keep things together here. The writing style is utterly superficial and borderline-laughable, is utterly riddled with cliches. The dialogue isn't much better. There's some insight to be found in here, but it's buried far too deep beneath the author's almost-shameless preachiness.

Most certainly not one of McCullough's finest moments, and most deservedly out-of-print, "Creed" is worth an expedition to the used-book store only if you're a fan of McCullough and/or the post-apocalyptic novel. You'd be a lot better off with McCullough's other work, and might I suggest Stephen King's "The Stand" if you're looking for a truly fine novel of Christianity at the end of the world.

For the audio version, Simon Vance does an excellent job with the scores of characters and their various accents and personalities. Of course the story is excellent with great comedy but also addressing serious issues. Definitely a top Dickens choice.

The "trick" to comprehending a "trickster" novel

One of the things that's often hard in reading other readers' responses to an author that you absolutely adore (and I am an avid Morrison fan) is preparing for the types of reviews that often try to invalidate her or dismiss her because her writing demands so much from us. Yet, I believe her Nobel prize speaks for itself (even for all those who were "forced" into reading her for a class or seminar -or even because Oprah said so), so when others "trash" her, my disgust is not in their inability to appreciate her but in a recurring trend that continues to prove that our mass-media, TV-dominated culture has produced a generation of readers (and I use the term loosely) who no longer appreciate reading a book for the sheer pleasure of how the written language comes together and how an author like Morrison blends both oral culture and myths with written text.
And, folks, you really need that appreciation if you're going to get into a novel like Tar Baby. I believe some very basic knowledge needs to be in place. A) Some knowledge of the African American folktale of the tar baby and Brer Rabbit B.) Some knowledge of the biblical story of Adam and Eve and how religious doctrine has traditionally interpreted it. C.) Some understanding of the "trickster" (and this novel is filled with this figure) tradition in both American and African lore--who is tricked, who's doing the tricking and what is the overall "trick": colonialism? male-female relations? race relations?
I believe that once we recover much of the traditions that someone like Morrison has been exposed to (from the Bible to the blues to Faulkner to Zora Neale Hurston), her novels can be read with some appreciation and respect. . . and love.
I'm not one of those who believe that Morrison as a black woman author is too "marginal" to be appreciated by a "mainstream" reader, but a "true reader" is someone who can transcend their particular identities and trust a writer to take then onto any journey outside themselves and not even mind if there is a "trick" in store for them, or some profound pleasure...or horrific pain.
Reading is about trusting the author to reveal to us some new vision we did not know existed...But be prepared: Morrison is not the type of writer who will hold your hand!
Here's hoping that Amazon can inspire true love of reading and real thought and vision that comes from extensive readership! Only then, can user reviews be exciting and a pleasure to read!

A satire with real bite

"Tar Baby" may not be the most celebrated of Toni Morrison's many memorable novels, but, in my opinion, it's the most fun. Much of the story takes place at the Caribbean mansion of white millionaire Valerian Street. Morrison weaves a deliciously nasty psychodrama involving Street, his flaky wife, the Street's black servants, and Jadine, a young black woman who is niece to the servants and who has been educated thanks to Valerian's money. Into this mix Morrison tosses Son, a dreadlocked black man with a dangerous edge.
"Tar Baby" is a frequently outrageous satire of racial identity, sexual politics, consumer culture, class consciousness, and family dysfunctionality. Her cast of characters is colorfully warped in an almost Dickensian manner. Ultimately, I read "Tar Baby" as a comic tragedy of people trapped in a complex web of racial, sexual, and economic mythologies. Profane, thought-provoking, ironic, and rich in scathing humor, this novel is ample proof of Toni Morrison's writerly talent.

Role-Reversals

In Tar Baby, Valerian Street, a wealthy white candy mogul, suffers some devastating role reversals. This situation has nothing to do with "political correctness" but rather the truth of the fact that no one can mastermind and counterfeit a reality forever. Valerian cannot grow Pennsylvania plants in L'Isle de Chevaliers any more than he can recreate the racial, economic, and sexual hierarchy that existed there. This point is not "a rip-off from real life" as one amazon.com reviewer described it. Nor is it, to my mind, her most profound. I agree that _Beloved_ soars higher.
I think the "trick" to reading Morrison is reading at your own level. I read many of her books as a young teenager and enjoyed them merely for their plots. I liked them because the people were fascinating and the suspense was real. Morrison hadn't won the Nobel or been championed by Oprah Winfrey, so I didn't have her reputation to contend with. And I didn't feel that my intelligence or sophistication depended on understanding her every word. So if I couldn't understand something, I moved on with the story. Now that I am in college, and an English major, I understand much more of Morrison's art as I re-read the novels of my adolescence. However, if I don't understand the significance of some image or passage, I let it go. Then I talk to someone about it. One cannot read Morrison's academic and artistic novels any other way. Although it doesn't have to be drudgery, Morrison's books are meant to be "studied" (which is just a fancy way of saying "discussed"). If you are intimidated by the Morrison mystique, I recommend leaving one's ego at the door when entering Morrison's world. Then, I recommend talking to someone more familiar with Morrison's work before you cast her books aside.

These include no fewer than five books by McCain and his alter ego and co-author, Mark Salter, that were aimed at advancing McCain's presidential ambitions, including the well-received Faith of My Fathers (1999), Worth the Fighting For (2002), Why Courage Matters (2004), Character is Destiny (2005) and the 2007 campaign tome, Hard Call: The Art of Great Decisions.

And there were excellent biographies published after McCain's Straight Talk Express ran out of gas while seeking the GOP nomination in 2000, including Elizabeth Drew's Citizen McCain (2002), Paul Alexander's Man of the People: The Life of John McCain (2003) and Robert Timberg's John McCain: An American Odyssey (2007). And that doesn't count my personal favorite, Timberg's acclaimed The Nightingale's Song (1995), in which he chronicled the lives and careers of five fellow graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy from the Vietnam era -- McCain, Bud McFarland, Oliver North, John Poindexter and Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.).

Any of the previous books, as well as Elaine Povich's workmanlike biography, would have become best-sellers had McCain won the election, but since he didn't, they will serve to chronicle for future generations one of the most remarkable life stories of any contemporary American public figure, who's obviously not ready to ride off into the western sunset.

Povich's book, John McCain: A Biography, is one of a series of biographies commissioned by Connecticut-based Greenwood Press and designed for high school students "who need challenging yet accessible biographies" that are "fun to read." Its 85 previous subjects range from Al Capone to Princess Diana to Yo-Yo Ma, and include President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) -- also by Povich.

Povich, a veteran Washington correspondent who covered Congress for Newsday and the Chicago Tribune and is now a freelance journalist, is well-qualified to tell McCain's life story. While there isn't much she's able to tell us about McCain that we didn't already know, from his nearly six years in a North Vietnamese prison to his involvement in the Keating scandal to his emergence as a leading Senate maverick, she does it in an interesting and engaging way.

Povich properly acknowledges her debt to the McCain-Salter books; to other McCain biographers like Timberg and Alexander; and to the vast body of journalistic coverage of McCain, such as The Arizona Republic's exhaustively researched 14-part series in 2007. But she also does her homework, by interviewing McCain as well as his mother and brother; his Naval Academy classmates and former Navy comrades, including fellow Vietnam POW Orson Swindle, and former Senate colleagues and aides.

For example, McCain's 97-year-old mother Roberta, whose outspoken nature inspired her famous son's penchant for telling it like it is, told Povich how McCain had to attend some 20 different schools while growing up as the son of an admiral posted to bases around the world. "He soon learned to cope in the best way he knew -- with humor and with a certain tough side that dared schoolmates to cross him," Povich writes.

And as future political rivals and others who would tangle with McCain would discover, his mother cited an early example of his temper. "Johnny was a happy child," she said, except when he flew into occasional rages, holding his breath and turning blue until he passed out, and making wisecracks that sometimes got him into trouble.

Another important clue to understanding McCain was the influence of William Ravenel, a teacher at St. Stephen's Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., where McCain's parents enrolled him when his father was at the Pentagon. "He was one of the few people to whom I confided that I was bound for Annapolis and a Navy career," McCain told Povich during the 2008 presidential campaign.

It was Ravenel, McCain said, who instilled in him the Episcopal honor code that remains his most important trait: "I will not lie; I will not cheat; I will not steal: I will report the student who does." McCain told Povich that he did not fully understand the things that Ravenel was talking about until he found himself in a Vietnamese prison many years later.

"He was the one guy I wanted to see when I got out of prison," McCain recalled. "There wasn't anybody I felt I could talk to about it. I just wanted to see Ravenel. I wanted to tell him that I finally understood there in Hanoi what he had been trying to tell me all those years about life and what it means. I wanted to thank him and apologize for being so stupid." But Ravenel died two years before McCain was released from prison.

There's obviously much more to John McCain's life story, and Povich tells it as well as any of his previous biographers, often drawing on her own reporting, as she did in her story about his victory over George W. Bush in the 2000 New Hampshire primary, when it appeared McCain was on his way to winning the GOP nomination.

It took him eight more years to do that, as it turned out, and even though he didn't achieve his ultimate goal, John McCain remains a force to be reckoned with in the Senate and American politics, which is enough to justify yet another biography of this remarkable politician.
